Meaford Council to Establish Citizens Committee on Remuneration

Meaford | by Ken Hashizume

Mayor Barb Clumpus says this will remove staff and Council from an awkward situation.

Council pay in Meaford could soon be determined by its residents.

Mayor Barb Clumpus introduced a motion on Monday calling for a committee made up of up to five qualified and impartial citizens.

The committee will be appointed by Council and the mandate will be to review and make recommendations on renumeration levels for the new Council in 2022.

Council passed the motion to direct staff to craft a by-law to establish that committee

Clumpus says this is a way for the community to have a direct influence on Council.

She says residents will be able to participate in this community engagement piece.

Clumpus says the idea came out of a recent staff report on Council renumeration.

That was where salaries for the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and Councillors were adjusted to make up for the loss of the tax-free portion that was removed by the province.

She says that made for an awkward situation where staff had to propose these increases and Council ended up voting on it.

Clumpus says other municipalities have similar by-laws and felt this was a good way to handle the issue.

She says staff will develop a terms of reference and then residents will be encouraged to apply.
