Very disappointing news for the large number of young families on the Walkerton Daycare’s 130 name waiting list.
The Daycare which was slated for a two room one million dollar expansion project this year has been delayed by a year.
While the Ministry has already approved the 1 million dollar funding allocation for the project, the final approvals needed to put the project tender has not come in time for the expansion project to get underway this year.
There are a few reasons for the delays on both sides including some back and forth signing delays, as well as new additional Ministry approval requirements introduced after the submission of the approvals to proceed took place.
Mayor Chris Peabody suspects the Cabinet shuffle also played a part in the delays.
The two room expansion project would have created 39 new child care spaces within the daycare.
The Walkerton Daycare is located in St. Teresa of Calcutta School.
The Walkerton Daycare is unique in the fact it is the only municipally run subsidized daycare in all of Grey and Bruce Counties.
Peabody says Brockton values the importance of childcare and he is looking forward to the expansion project.
The daycare expansion will now be a project for the 2020 construction season.
The project is shared venture between the Ministry of Education, the Bruce Grey Catholic District School Board and the Municipality of Brockton.
